At Pilgrim’s, we are dedicated to offering growth and development opportunities to team members. We offer leadership and training programs to team members to further develop incoming and existing leaders. We know that leaders are not born—they are made—and we pride ourselves on employing and recognizing people who have the potential to be successful leaders.
Our team members have the opportunity to receive leadership training through many programs developed by the Culture and Talent team, which works across Pilgrim’s and our parent company, JBS USA, to maintain a continuous pipeline of talented team members. Our leadership programs are tailored to the needs of each business unit with communication across units to share best practices and results.
The Internship Program gives college students an opportunity to gain practical industry experience and develop extensive leadership skills. This 10-week summer internship challenges approximately 70 participants through hands-on learning experiences and meaningful projects that improve our business and provide education and valuable workplace experience. Interns are placed in either a production or corporate business unit role where they learn from experienced leaders who offer them industry exposure and networking opportunities with senior management. Not only are our internships paid positions, but the program also allows students to receive college credits.
Our Supervisor Development Program is designed to provide every newly hired or promoted Supervisor at Pilgrim’s the tools they need to be successful in leadership roles. These team members are supported by members in their facilities and participate in four virtual training sessions and one in-person training session at the corporate office, where they are given the opportunity to network and learn from executive and front-line leaders across the company. Over 225 team members participate in this program every year.
Recent college graduates looking to pursue their passion for building a career in the animal protein industry can apply to our Management Trainee Program. This 12-month rotational program is designed for those ready to excel in our technical, cultural and leader-based work environments. Customizable rotations allow trainees to grow their project management, problem-solving and collaboration skills in line with their own interests and career aspirations. Each year, we onboard nearly 20 trainees from the campuses across the U.S. The orientation curriculum empowers trainees to strive for individual success while contributing to Pilgrim’s operations.
The Mexico Trainee Program has more than 40 trainees each year and is designed to create a pipeline of recent college graduates from Mexico who will develop into future operations leaders. This 12-month rotational leadership development program is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in multiple areas of a facility giving and an in-depth understanding of how pieces of our business work together. The first six months of the training program are spent in Mexico at a Pilgrim’s processing facility. The last six months are spent in the U.S. with the intention of trainees being placed in a leadership role at that facility. Throughout the 12 months, trainees go through three leadership development training sessions to prepare them for an accelerated career.
University of Pilgrim’s is a training system directed to all levels to strengthen the performance of our team members and achieve results. To date in Mexico, we have been able to help more than 275 team members develop personally and professionally and obtain their High School Degree. Our University of Pilgrim’s in the U.S. has over 800 courses available to all team members.
The Accelerate Future Leaders program supports the development of our future senior leaders in the business focusing on personal effectiveness, influencing and commercial awareness to lead our teams to “Be the Best.”
In order to ensure a pipeline of talent and help succession into key roles, the ‘Futures’ program is a structured training program which leads to making individuals job ready for becoming a Team Leader. The program delivers a level of support that utilizes a blend of engaging and challenging learning methodologies focused on application of new skills and behaviors back in the workplace.
The Leadership Pipeline is a leadership model for selecting and growing leaders at all levels within the business. The Leadership Pipeline Institute (LPI) specializes in helping to build an internal pipeline of qualified leaders, creating empowered, performance-focused organizations. The model shows how each layer of leadership is developed by defining the different skills required as leaders move from one level to the next.
Our graduates gain development by attending management modules to ensure they have the right tools to be a future leader in Moy Park. The modules are delivered as a cohort of graduates to enable team building and shared learnings. Workshops will aim to develop knowledge, skills and behaviors to take their performance to the next level.
Our Operational Leadership Trainee Program was created in 2019 to identify internal and external early careers talent, such as recent graduates or apprentices, who have the potential to become future operational leaders. It is a 24-month rotational program whereby trainees spend six-month placements at various UK facilities working on key operational projects. Alongside this they attend four residential workshops based on leadership and management, working towards a recognizable management qualification. Trainees are assigned a mentor from the leadership team to build their confidence and learn from them in order to accelerate their career.
We are able to support and develop colleagues through a wide-range of apprenticeships which combine on and off-the-job learning to improve knowledge, skills and behaviors. We currently have colleagues enrolled on apprenticeships in a wide range of disciplines including finance, project management, HR, food science and management. Our apprenticeships range from entry-level to MBA degrees.
At Pilgrim’s, our goal is to create a culture that yields sustained excellence. Our Leadership Warehouse works to motivate team members to do their part in the continuation of Pilgrim’s culture. The Leadership Warehouse Program outlines different leadership development offerings, providing education opportunities to different levels of leadership. We provide team members with access to programs that further their own leadership abilities, and propels Pilgrim’s closer to its vision. Each of the Leadership Warehouse development programs are designed and facilitated internally allowing us to offer culturally relevant and company-oriented leadership solutions.
Pilgrim’s also offers full tuition sponsorship for a wide array of coursework through JBS USA’s 10-year partnership with Colorado State University. This partnership includes executive MBA, online MBA, graduate certificate, professional certificate and online agribusiness degree completion programs.
